This is a very popular work by the Barnard family, made in 1840 and said to be Britain's oldest silversmith.
It is a large sugar bowl typical of this era, with a sturdy form with beautiful curves.
The carvings and the gold plating inside are still intact, and it has been kept in such good condition that it is hard to believe that it was built over 180 years ago.

A bachelor-sized teapot with something like a family crest engraved on it, which seems to have been made as a set, also arrived at the same time.
