This solid silver vesta case (portable match holder) was made in 1903 by William Hair Haseler, a silversmith in Birmingham, England.
Both sides are densely decorated with flowing acanthus scrollwork, hand-engraved by a skilled craftsman. The bright-cut technique, in which the graver is angled to reflect light in multiple directions, gives the case a brilliant sparkle that changes with the viewing angle. A shield-shaped cartouche adorns the center of the front, with a classic monogram adding an elegant touch.
The interior retains its elegant gold gilt finish, and the side ring was designed to attach it to a pocket watch chain (Albert chain). There are some fine signs of wear from age, but the lid spring is firm and it opens and closes smoothly. Today, it can add a touch of refinement to everyday life as a mint tin or pill case.
