This is a vintage sterling silver brooch made in 1964 by the Birmingham silversmith "Shipton & Co Ltd.".
Featuring the "lymphad" (a galley ship), a motif found in traditional Scottish heraldry and Celtic Revival designs, the ship's hull navigating rough seas and the rope details are rendered through openwork (pierce work) and three-dimensional relief. The oxidized silver finish enhances the shadows, emphasizing its historical gravitas..
While there are minor scratches due to age on the reverse and a slight bend in the pin, the rotating clasp functions securely. It is equipped with a loop on the top, allowing you to thread a chain through it and enjoy it as a pendant as well. A piece that adds an intellectual accent to the collar of a knit sweater or coat.
