What Is a Salver?

A “salver” is a silver tray.
Among trays (flat, shallow containers), only those made of silver are called salvers.

In upper-class European households, they were used to carry cups and plates to the table, and by butlers to bring letters and cards to their masters.

Round ones are most common, but they can also be oval, rectangular, or octagonal.
They come in all sizes and some have several feet.
Those with handles are not considered salvers, even if they are made of silver.

The Origin of the Word Salver

The word salver (SALVER) comes from the Latin word “SALVARE”.
As a verb, “SALVARE” means “to protect and save from danger,” and as a noun, it means “savior.”

In royal and noble households, servants would taste food and drink before it was served to prevent it from being poisoned. Once the tasting was complete, the food and drink were placed on a silver salver before being served.

Food placed on a salver was proof that it had been tasted and found safe. For the aristocrats of the time, the salver was thus a savior that protected them from poison.
