Types of time adjustment methods

There are several ways to set the time for pocket watches, depending on the era and type of watch.

We will introduce each of them, including videos.

①Pendant set (crown pull)

This is a common method for turning the crown of a watch by pulling it.
This method became common for pocket watches made after 1900.

The ones with crowns that can be pulled upwards are pendant sets.
If you apply too much force suddenly, the crown may be damaged.
Therefore, make sure to pull slowly while applying force.
It's easy once you know how much pressure to use and the tricks.

②Lever set (sword pull)

This method involves pulling out a small lever on the side of the dial and turning the crown.
It is often seen on pocket watches and railroad clocks from around 1900.

Hook the lever on the side of the dial with your nail and pull it out.
You can set the time by pulling out the watch and turning the crown.
When pulling out the lever, make sure to pull it out all the way.
In rare cases, there is also a sliding method instead of a pulling method.

③Nail set (dowel press)

The method involves turning the crown while pressing a small button near the crown.
It can be seen on watches from around 1890-1910, which was the transition period to pendant sets.

Turn the crown while pressing the small button on the side with your fingernail.
The time cannot be set unless the button is pressed firmly.

④Key alignment (keyhole)

This is the time setting method of old key-wound pocket watches before crowns became popular.
There is a keyhole for setting the time on the back side of the watch, in addition to the mainspring keyhole.

In addition to the keyhole for turning the mainspring, there is also a keyhole for setting the time.
The keyhole near the center is the keyhole for setting the time.

⑤ Key alignment (needle direct)

This method involves inserting the key into the center of the hand and turning it directly to set the time.
It can be seen on old British clocks.

Open the windshield, insert the key into the center of the keyhole, and turn it directly.
This type of needle is often thick and welded and strong.
Please turn carefully so as not to damage the dial or hands.

FAQ

・What direction should I turn the crown?

Most watches turn the crown counterclockwise when viewed from above to advance the time.
However, some pocket watches are reversed.

・Is it not a good idea to set the time back?

Basically, it is better to set the time in the direction in which the time advances.
It is possible to rotate the machine in the opposite direction, but depending on the machine, it may damage parts.
However, from my experience, I don't think there will be any problems if you make minor adjustments for about 10 minutes.
However, for watches such as chronographs and calendars whose crowns have functions other than setting the time, it is better to set the time only in the direction of advancing the time.

・What if the crown is hard to pull?

In rare cases, the crown of an old watch may be difficult to pull.
You may be able to pull it out easily by rotating it a little while pulling.
If the watch still does not close, please contact a watch store for repair.

・What if the crown comes off?

The crown is a part that is subjected to force, so it is easily broken and is considered a consumable item.
Also, even if it is not broken, it is only held in place by screws or adhesive, so it may fall off during use.
If the crown falls off, please take the watch and the broken crown to a watch store for repair.
